Many students find the idea of taking a semester off very attractive. If you are struggling to complete term papers and stuck in the midst of heavy reading assignments and difficult examinations, a semester off seems like the perfect escape, however before you decide to take a semester off you should know that it could either hurt your chances to complete college, or it could even help you a great deal. It all depends on why and how you take the semester off.

The first question you have to ask yourself is why do you want to take the semester off? Do you just want to goof off? If this is the case then taking a semester off may hurt you, because you may lose the momentum and drive that it takes to finish college. You might skip the semester and never get back on track and then find it difficult to get into the groove of college life again.

Maybe you want to take the semester off because you feel stuck in a routine or because you need a change in your life. If this is your reason for skipping the semester, then the change of scene could help you to recharge your batteries and come back to college with a greater zeal and enthusiasm. This would definitely be something positive for you.

Going even deeper, maybe you want to take a semester off so that you can find out who you really are. If you spend a semester in serious introspection and accompany this with travel abroad, learning new languages, meeting new people and learning things that you wouldn’t have learned in college, then this will help you to mature and not only succeed in college but in your career and life after graduation.

Along with this, if your semester away from college enables you to get a better understanding of who you are and what you should do with your life, then you will probably be a much better student when you hit the books again. Lots of students are simply not motivated to work hard in college because they do not understand why they are in college in the first place. The person who takes the semester off to find him or her self is likely to come back as a better student.

Have you ever had the urge to roll up your sleeves and help people who are suffering or who need a hand? Taking a semester off to do some social service or volunteer work could help you as much or even more than the people who you go out to serve. There are many opportunities for volunteer work abroad and also in the U.S. A semester spent in this type of service is usually quite conducive to future academic success.

So, before you jump off and take a semester off. Carefully examine your inner motives. If you are doing it for self-discovery, to gain new skills, to renew your desire for learning or to serve others, then a semester off will probably be helpful to you and not hinder your chances of graduating from college.
